Phebe Novakovic and Brian Moynihan are two prominent American chief executives, but public records do not establish that they are relatives, business partners, or colleagues at the same company. Their clearest documented connection is institutional: both are members of the Business Roundtable, an association of chief executives of major U.S. companies.

As of September 2026, Novakovic remains chairman and CEO of General Dynamics, while Moynihan remains chair and CEO of Bank of America. Their careers intersect broadly through U.S. corporate leadership and policy organizations, but their professional paths have developed in very different industries.

General Dynamics identifies Novakovic as its chairman and chief executive officer and notes that she has served as a company director since 2012. Bank of America’s current governance materials list Moynihan as chair and CEO and a director since January 2010.

What Is the Connection Between Phebe Novakovic and Brian Moynihan?

The strongest verifiable direct link between Phebe Novakovic and Brian Moynihan is their membership in the Business Roundtable. The organization separately lists Novakovic as chairman and CEO of General Dynamics and Moynihan as chair and CEO of Bank of America.

That shared membership places them within the same broad network of senior U.S. corporate leaders. It does not, however, prove that they have personally collaborated on a specific project, investment, transaction, or corporate initiative.

A review of their current corporate biographies and governance records does not identify a shared employer or joint corporate board seat. Their careers largely run in parallel rather than through the same organization.

Novakovic’s Banking Board Connection Is With JPMorgan Chase

One point that can cause confusion is Novakovic’s role in the banking sector. She has served on the JPMorgan Chase board of directors since 2020, not the Bank of America board. JPMorgan announced her election in October 2020, effective December 7 of that year.

That distinction matters. JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America are separate major financial institutions and competitors. Novakovic’s JPMorgan directorship therefore should not be interpreted as evidence that she works for, reports to, or shares a Bank of America governance role with Moynihan.

Her JPMorgan responsibilities include service on the Audit Committee and Public Responsibility Committee, according to JPMorgan’s current leadership profile.

    Who Is Phebe Novakovic?

Phebe N. Novakovic is a longtime defense-industry executive with an unusually deep background in both government and corporate management. She has served as chairman and CEO of General Dynamics since January 1, 2013.

She joined General Dynamics in 2001 and moved through a series of senior positions before becoming chief executive. Those roles included vice president for strategic planning, senior vice president for planning and development, executive vice president for Marine Systems, and president and chief operating officer.

    Her Government and Intelligence Background

Before joining General Dynamics, Novakovic worked in U.S. national-security institutions. She served as special assistant to the secretary and deputy secretary of defense from 1997 to 2001 and previously worked at the Office of Management and Budget and the Central Intelligence Agency.

A historical government biography provides additional detail, reporting that she worked as a CIA operations officer from 1983 to 1986 and later held national-security budget responsibilities at the Office of Management and Budget.

Novakovic graduated from Smith College in 1979 and earned an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1988.

    General Dynamics Under Novakovic

General Dynamics operates across business aviation, shipbuilding, combat systems, weapons and munitions, and defense and information technology services.

The company reported $52.6 billion in revenue and $4.2 billion in net earnings for 2025, with year-end backlog reaching $118 billion. Revenue was 10.1% higher than in 2024.

Growth continued into 2026. For the second quarter ended June 2026, General Dynamics reported $14.1 billion in revenue, an 8.1% year-over-year increase, along with diluted earnings per share of $4.24.

Novakovic also holds several outside leadership positions. In 2026, the Aerospace Industries Association lists her as chair of its Board of Governors, and the Association of the United States Army lists her as chairman of its board.

    Who Is Brian Moynihan?

Brian T. Moynihan is an American lawyer and banking executive who has led Bank of America since January 1, 2010. He currently serves as both chair of the board and chief executive officer.

His route to the top of Bank of America was very different from Novakovic’s government and defense background.

Moynihan entered Fleet Financial Group, later FleetBoston Financial, in April 1993 as deputy general counsel. He subsequently moved into corporate strategy, development, brokerage and wealth management. When Bank of America acquired FleetBoston in 2004, Moynihan joined Bank of America as president of Global Wealth and Investment Management.

From 2007 to 2009, he led Global Corporate and Investment Banking. He also held other senior positions at Bank of America before the board selected him to succeed Kenneth Lewis as CEO.

Moynihan graduated from Brown University and the University of Notre Dame Law School.

    Bank of America Under Moynihan

Bank of America is one of the largest financial institutions in the United States, operating across consumer banking, wealth management, commercial banking, investment banking and global markets.

For 2025, Bank of America reported $113.1 billion in revenue, net of interest expense, and $30.5 billion in net income. Its year-end assets totaled approximately $3.41 trillion.

The bank’s latest reported quarter available as of September 2026 is the second quarter ended June 30. Bank of America reported $31.6 billion in revenue and $9.1 billion in net income for that period.

Moynihan also participates in organizations including the Business Roundtable, Financial Services Forum, Bank Policy Institute, Business Council and World Economic Forum’s International Business Council. He serves as chancellor of the Corporation of Brown University as well.

    How Their Career Paths Differ

Novakovic and Moynihan reached similar corporate titles through very different professional routes.

Novakovic developed expertise in national security, government budgeting, defense policy and industrial operations before becoming a major aerospace and defense executive. Her experience at the CIA, Office of Management and Budget and Department of Defense gave her substantial exposure to institutions that are also key customers and stakeholders for General Dynamics.

Moynihan began as a lawyer and built much of his executive career inside financial services. His experience ranged from legal work and mergers and acquisitions to wealth management, investment banking, consumer banking and corporate strategy.

This difference also means that their businesses face distinct operating environments. General Dynamics is heavily influenced by government procurement, defense budgets, long-duration contracts, manufacturing capacity and military demand. Bank of America is affected by interest rates, credit conditions, financial regulation, consumer activity, capital markets and economic growth.

Their Shared Position in Corporate America

Although their industries are different, Novakovic and Moynihan have several meaningful similarities.

Both have led large, highly regulated companies for more than a decade. Both combine the chair and CEO roles at their respective companies, and both participate in organizations connecting major corporate leaders with wider economic and policy discussions.

The Business Roundtable is the most concrete documented institutional overlap. Its current member profiles identify both executives as participants.

Still, membership in the same association should not be overstated. It establishes that they belong to the same CEO organization, but it does not establish a close personal friendship, joint business venture or regular one-to-one collaboration.

Are Phebe Novakovic and Brian Moynihan Related?

There is no reliable public evidence establishing a family relationship between Phebe Novakovic and Brian Moynihan.

Their official corporate biographies describe entirely separate education and career histories. General Dynamics, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Business Roundtable materials do not identify them as relatives.

Search engines sometimes combine the names of prominent executives because readers are researching possible professional, financial or personal connections. That alone is not evidence of an actual relationship.

Have Phebe Novakovic and Brian Moynihan Worked Together?

No publicly documented employment history shows Novakovic and Moynihan working for the same company.

Novakovic’s principal corporate career has been at General Dynamics since 2001, while Moynihan’s financial-services career moved from FleetBoston to Bank of America. Their shared Business Roundtable membership creates an organizational overlap, but it is different from working together as colleagues.

There may also be ordinary institutional interactions between large corporations and banks that are not individually attributed to their CEOs. Such possibilities should not be presented as a personal relationship without specific evidence.

    Executive Compensation and Financial Information

Reliable public-company filings provide compensation information for both executives, but these figures should not be confused with personal net worth.

General Dynamics’ 2026 proxy statement reports $25,924,082 in 2025 total compensation for Novakovic under the SEC summary compensation table. That included salary, stock awards, option awards, incentive compensation and other compensation.

Bank of America’s board said it awarded Moynihan $41 million in total compensation for 2025, based on its compensation framework.

Bank of America’s SEC summary compensation table, however, reports approximately $33.71 million for Moynihan for 2025. The difference exists because SEC reporting rules recognize some equity awards according to their grant dates, while Bank of America’s performance-year compensation decision includes awards granted after the performance year. Bank of America explains this timing distinction directly in its proxy statement.

These disclosures document compensation, not total personal wealth. Published net-worth estimates for executives can rely on incomplete information about investments, liabilities, taxes and privately held assets, so an unsupported precise net-worth figure would be misleading.

Why the Novakovic and Moynihan Comparison Is Useful

The pairing provides a useful example of two different pathways to long-term leadership of major U.S. corporations.

Novakovic represents a leadership path rooted in government, national security, strategic planning and industrial operations. Moynihan represents a path that began in law and expanded through mergers, wealth management, investment banking and consumer finance.

Their shared Business Roundtable membership shows where those otherwise different careers converge: at the level of chief executives managing companies with substantial influence over the U.S. economy.

The available evidence therefore supports a fairly specific description of the relationship. Phebe Novakovic and Brian Moynihan are separate corporate leaders with a documented shared Business Roundtable affiliation, but there is no verified public evidence that they are relatives, business partners or longtime professional colleagues.
